Navigating Uncertainty: Lessons from the Zendo

Two people sit next to each other on the playa at Burning Man. The person on the right is wearing a Zendo Project T-shirt.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the moments that define transformation—not just for individuals, but for entire movements. So often, real change happens in the spaces between: between excitement and uncertainty, between expansion and grounding, between the known and the yet-to-be-discovered.

Zendo Project was created to hold this liminal space, providing support, structure, and care for those navigating non-ordinary states of consciousness. And right now, the world itself feels like a liminal space. The political landscape is shifting, the psychedelic field is evolving, and we are standing at the threshold of immense change. As with so many of the experiences we witness in the Zendo, times of change are not always easy—they can be unsettling, disorienting, and even painful.

We don’t know where transformation will lead us, or if the world on the other side will be better off than before. But one thing is certain: if we navigate transformation, as challenging as it may be, with care and support, we will be better off as a result.

We know that discomfort is not the enemy of growth. In the Zendo, we hope that guests feel supported to sit with difficult experiences rather than resist them. We create space for uncertainty, for unraveling, for emergence. These same skills are just as needed outside of the Zendo, as we navigate a world in flux. In times of change, we can choose to show up for one another the way we do in the Zendo—with patience, with presence, and with empathy.

This is our invitation: to practice compassionate care not just in psychedelic spaces, but in our everyday lives. Zendo Project is committed to growing the spirit of collective wellbeing within our communities. Today, we want to share our new statement of inclusivity and community support initiatives with you.

Let’s create a network of care that holds us all—through personal challenges, through collective upheaval, through future transformation—and build a world where connection guides us over every threshold we cross.

Zendo Project Statement of Inclusivity

Today is the UN’s World Day of Social Justice. In the spirit of this year’s theme, “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice,” Zendo Project is affirming our commitment to celebrating diversity and uplifting intersectionality.

In the face of mounting federal attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, our position is clear: Zendo Project will continue to celebrate diversity, champion accessibility, and stand firmly with vulnerable and marginalized members of our community. These values are not just aspirational—they are fundamental to providing effective, ethical, and compassionate care. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and gender inclusive care and education—work that is grounded in inclusive engagement built off reputable mental health and community building practices.

These past weeks have brought immense challenges to our Zendo Project community. As we witness the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles, and recent attacks on human rights at the federal level, we’re struck by both the scale of loss and the strength of human resilience. To those experiencing loss—homes, individual rights, resources, or worse—please know that your community is here for you. These aren’t just distant headlines to us; they’re events that touch us and the people we know and care about deeply.

In the midst of the recent natural disasters, we’ve been inspired by how many of our community members have stepped up to help others. At Zendo Project, we’re carefully considering how to best be of service to our community in times of immense upheaval. We are deeply aware of the emotional and mental impact these events can have on everyone involved.

Zendo Project stands in solidarity with you, our valued community. One of our foundational principles is “Safe Space”—we are committed to tending to the safety of our community members by providing resources, fostering connection, and advocating for individual and collective well-being. We believe in the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community, and we are confident that together, we will navigate this difficult chapter and emerge stronger. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Pulse team at pulse@zendoproject.org for updated resources per location, questions, input, or concerns – we are here for you!
